A lot of publicity around Manchester City’s big money takeover by the Abu Dhabi means that a lot of rumours have been started, some true but most are not. I had a spare minute and popped over to the Manchester City FansOnline part of the site, I must say people’s views change when you are on the opposite side. I remember when the Glaziers took over United, how bitter all the City fans were. Comments like money won’t win you anything, it is about the quality of players and similar comments. Suddenly with the cash injection at City they think they are in the top group of richest and best football clubs in the world along with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Barcelona.
The real question is: How does money affect the game of football?
I would be an idiot to say it has no bearing on the game, because clubs need the money to buy and train players. The better the team performs the more money the team gets back from prize winnings and from bigger and better sponsorship deals. The truth is that there is a lot more to football than money. The fact that even if a manager has the best players in the world he still has to make the team work together and produce winning results. Take a look at Chelsea, they have thrown a lot of money away buying a fair few players millions over their actual valuations and then still only finishing second place in both Premier League and Champions League competitions last season; granted they have one a trophy or two but it is not a sustainable or viable business if you are not clever with the money. There will come a time when Roman Abramovich will not have the funds to waste on current players’ wages and then Chelsea will follow clubs like West Ham and Leeds United.
City are reportedly seeking to sign Ronaldo from United; though this, as with Real Madrid, has been ruled out by Sir Alex Ferguson. An amusing article I came across, in the Mail On Sunday, was that Ronaldo was showing allegiance to City, after Christiano Ronaldo bought a new blue Bentley, this was most likely written by a City fanatic. Manchester City also put in an offer on Berbatov on the final day of the transfer window in an attempt to disrupt United‘s quest for another forward. City also stole Rubinho from under the noses of Chelsea in a lavish extravagance; though with the transfer window now closed Manchester City owners will have to wait until January to spend more of their new ‘wealth’. Though I fail to see the difference between City’s takeover by the Abu Dhabi group and Chelsea’s takeover by Abramovich. I also cannot see how they plan on making it profitable.

Personally I only feel that time will tell, I know as a United supporter I can relax in the safe knowledge that the clubs finances are not dire, but stable. The winnings from last season will pay off the purchases and still give a solid return to Malcolm Glazier.
Alex Ferguson is unfazed by City’s new owners and there is little chance of them challenging the top of the League table this season. Most United fans I have had the chance to speak to agree with Ferguson and feel he is doing a fantastic job both on and off the field. I agree whole heartedly.
