Arsenal have been actively searching for midfield reinforcements since the summer departures of Mathieu Flamini, Gilberto Silva and Alexander Hleb, despite the subsequent arrivals of Samir Nasri and Aaron Ramsey from Marseille and Cardiff respectively.
Spain international Xabi Alonso, however, was mentioned with a switch to north London but a mooted £16 million deal failed to transpire. Yet it could happen in four months time after the Liverpool player's representative Inaki Ibanez refused to rule out the possibility of a move.
"January is a long time away," he said.
"At the moment Xabi is concentrating on playing well for Liverpool. No agreement was reached to sell him, so mentally he is a Liverpool player.
"But we will see what happens in January."
Meanwhile, Stephane M'Bia is determined to leave his current club Rennes and join Arsenal at the first possible opportunity.
M'Bia, 22, claims that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger made a late deadline day approach to sign him but the French club refused to sanction the deal, determined to keep hold of their most highly regarded player.
However, the imposing defensive midfielder, who has been compared to former Arsenal hero Patrick Vieira, has begged Rennes to grant him his desire to play in the Premier League after his £10 million move to fell through a week ago.
He said: "Rennes are looking to improve my pay, but everyone know's that I want to move to the Premier League to improve myself and play in the biggest league in the world.
"Arsenal made contact in the final hours of the last transfer window, but Rennes did not want to let me go."
Sebastian Giovinco is another midfielder Arsenal are understood to have expressed a recent interest in. The Juventus player, 21 is regarded as one of Italy's most exciting prospects but his future with the club is in doubt after his agent demanded the player is offered a considerably improve contract.
Arsenal are thought to be closely monitoring the developments after Juve refused to increase their £15,00-per week, five-year offer. Open to other offers, Giovinco said: "To be honest, I couldn't care less whether the contract is renewed or not."
Ghana Captain Stephen Appiah, meanwhile, is set to decide his future before the end of the week with both Arsenal and West Ham reportedly vying to attract the free agent to the Premier League.
