Keane scores his first and Gerrard his 100th as Liverpool cruise past PSV; Chelsea draw a blank at Cluj but lose Drogba; Late double from Messi rescue

Liverpool 3 - PSV 1 (Champions League, October 1, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) PSV were rocked back within four minutes at Anfield, Isaksson saved an effort from Torres but he couldn’t keep hold of the follow-up from Dirk Kuyt. Robbie Keane scored the second, guiding home a Torres cross to score his first goal for Liverpool. Deep into the second period Steven Gerrard scored his 100th goal for Liverpool in the only way he knows how - a howitzer of a free-kick. Danny Koevermans then pulled one back for the Dutch side.

CFR Cluj 0 - Chelsea 0 (Champions League, October 1, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Cluj played well and frustrated Chelsea for the majority of the match to earn a creditable draw and give the Romanians an incredible four points from two games. The flashpoints included Didier Drogba being forced off injured early in the second half, while at the end anelka had a goal chalked off while Eugen Trica hit the outside of the post with a long-range effort for Cluj.

Atletico Madrid 2 - Marseille 1 (Champions League, October 1, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Sergio Aguero put Atletico one-up at home to Marseille, controlling expertly before slotting home the opener to further add to his growing reputation. The French side hit back just after the quarter-hour, Mamadou Niang heading home at the back post. Minutes later Atletico re-took the lead through Raul Garcia who got the faintest of touches on a free-kick.

Anorthosis Famagusta 3 - Panathanaikos 1 (Champions League, October 1, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) An own goal from Josu Sarriegi gave Anorthosis an early lead at home to Panathanaikos. The home side were in dreamland when Sinisa Dobrasinovic doubled the lead but the Greeks pulled one back with a penalty from Dimitris Salpigidis. Late on, Anorthosis wrapped up the win with a goal from the superbly named Hawar Mulla Mohammed.

Inter Milan 1 - Werder Bremen 1 (Champions League, October 1, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Inter Milan, looking to bounce back from defeat in the Milan derby, took the early initiative at home to Werder Bremen, full-back Maicon stormed through from the right-back position and chipped the keeper for a fine finish. Just after the hour-mark, Claudio Pizarro equalised at the back post to stun the San Siro.

Bordeaux 1 - Roma 3 (Champions League, October 1, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Yoann Gourcuff gave Bordeaux the lead with a fine curling shot into the corner in the French sides home game with Roma but the home side went into the break a man down following the sending off of Carlos Henrique (shocking decision). Mirko Vucinic headed home a corner in the 64th minute to tie up the match. And minutes later the Serie A side took the lead, Julio Baptista bagging a fine free-kick. Moments before the end Taddei fired in a cross on the volley and Baptista slid in to score his second to wrap up the victory.

Shakhtar Donetsk 1 - Barcelona 2 (Champions League, October 1, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Ilsinho held off Puyol and chipped over Valdes, to give Shakhtar Donetsk the opener just before half-time at home to Barcelona. On 87 minutes Lionel Messi tapped home at the back post to equalise, a goal the Ukranian bitterly contested. And in injury-time (of four minutes, played by the swiftly-becoming-controversial ref Howard Webb) Lionel Messi chipped another to give Barca a barely deserved win.

Sporting Lisbon 2 - Basel 0 (Champions League, October 1, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) After a goalless first-half, Sporting went in front thanks to an exceptionally fortuitous goal, a defensive clearance bounced off Leandro Romagnoli over the Basel keeper and into the net. Just before the end of the game, the home side got a second through Derlei.
