Deposed world champion Casey Stoner faces a career-saving operation in the winter to repair his broken left wrist.
The 22-year-old Marlboro Ducati rider heads into his home Grand Prix of Australia at Phillip Island this weekend fighting to secure second place behind triumphant Valentino Rossi.
Stoner says it is "disappointing" to be told the scaphoid, broken originally in 2003, has never fully healed.
Chief backs tyre changes
Dorna chief executive Carmelo Ezpeleta feels the decision to move to a single tyre formula for 2009 will help reduce speeds in the sport.
It was announced at the Japanese Grand Prix that only one manufacturer will supply tyres to teams from next season with all companies welcome to bid.
Ezpeleta told Motorsprint: "Without the competition among tyre manufacturers, development will be slowed down."
